Bill Cosby Lynched Himself
Stop with the blind allegiance
I have watched this Bill Cosby saga with great interest. It always amazes me how black people can show such blind allegiance to what we call iconic black figures. It is especially baffling to me how they would give that allegiance to Bill Cosby.
In May of 2009, Cosby gave a speech, where he used his best Cliff Huxtable voice to castigate the black community. Some of the things that he said, I agree with, but it was how the speech was used by conservative pundits that vexed me. They used it as an ah-ha, see if Bill Cosby says it, it must be true. Many in the black community were angry and rightfully so. Here was America's Dad chastising them. I even wrote him an open letter.
One of those who was angry was a comic by the name of Hannibal Burress. Burress added a bit about Cosby to his act that highlighted the fact that many women had come forward to accuse Cosby of rape. You can watch the video here. That set off a firestorm and now 24 women have come forward to accuse Cosby of raping them.
They all tell similar stories. Cosby would win their trust. He would invite them over for dinner or to talk about their careers. He would sometimes offer them pills or the drink would taste funny. He would offer them something to drink and then he would rape them. The women are of different races and from different backgrounds. The youngest was 15 during her encounter with Cosby. The abuse span a period from the late 60s to 2005. Yet, many in the black community see some kind of conspiracy against Cosby. There have been articles that trumpet The Lynching of Bill Cosby. Stop it.
There have been black men who were hanged for absolutely no reason and I find this imagery offensive. When unarmed black men are shot by the police, we do everything we can to rebut their claims, but now the cry is "innocent until proven guilty." Please.
Bill Cosby lynched himself. He kept doing the same things over and over again and he finally got caught. It is not like some of these women did not try to hold him responsible for his crimes. He was reported in the 60s but the lady's family did not believe her and urged her to go meet him again. He was reported in the 80s and the police refused to file charges. Finally, in 2005 he tried to rape Andrea Constand, an employee at Temple University where he is a big wig. She went to the cops and they said they could not file charges because everything before the sexual act was consensual. So, she sued. Cosby fought the suit by giving an interview to hide another accuser who was coming out. He fought, until Constand lined up 13 women to testify on her behalf and then he settled. Cosby even leaked his own daughter's drug addiction to the press so that he could hide the fact that he and Sammy Davis, Jr. were having orgies with Las Vegas showgirls, which is not against the law. When people finally did start asking him about the accusations, he tried to hide it. Not to mention, that he sent a child to prison, that he probably fathered, for three years.
Cosby is the cause for all of his troubles. He used his smug platform to denigrate blacks and now it is coming back to bite him. He continued with the same MO for years and it finally caught up to him. And if that is not enough to make you think about Cosby's actions, then I leave you with this bit of him joking about raping women.
